The 32-year-old returned to action in the league for the first time since August 2023, when he limped off the pitch with a hamstring injury against Burnley in City's season opener. De Bruyne started on the bench at Newcastle and was only introduced into the game in the 69th minute when he replaced Bernardo Silva.
