Described as a 'very discouraging process,' has revealed that there are just 10 days left on the current Collective Bargaining Agreement between PRO referees and the Professional Soccer Referees Association [PSRA]. The CBA is set to expire on January 15 and a work stoppage is "imminent."

“We are bargaining for a contract with the same intensity, focus and dedication we bring to every game as highly trained officials who live for this sport,” Professional Soccer Referees Association president Peter Manikowski said. “Right now the parties remain far apart on matters of great importance to our members’ lives and livelihoods. We are frustrated, but remain committed.”

“Together with others in this league, we have a large role in the gaining popularity and success of this sport,” read PSRA’s statement. “Now, it is time for the Professional Referee Organization and Major League Soccer and to show officials that they, too, value the contributions our members bring to the game.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

The PSRA represents MLS, USL and NWSL across the three respective leagues. Per the report, the U.S. Soccer Federation is set to pull funding from the organization, nearing an amount of $2m, which could lead to further challenges. PRO, founded by the USSF in 2012, oversees match assignments, education of officials and the identification of new referees.
