Xabi Alonso's team, who have never won the German top-flight crown, extended their lead at the top of the table to five points with a thoroughly deserved victory against the Bavarian giants. Still unbeaten this season after 21 league matches, Leverkusen will take immense belief from this game that they can finally go on to claim the title and end Bayern's incredible streak of 11 straight successes.
After a near-10-minute delay to kick-off, Leverkusen found themselves in the lead after 18 minutes. Florian Wirtz grabbed possession and rushed forward to create an attack that had Bayern scrambling to clear their lines, giving away a corner. From the resultant set piece, it was worked to Robert Andrich who lashed it across the face of goal where Josip Stanisic was able to slot home from the back post. The full-back refused to celebrate given he is on loan at Leverkusen from the reigning champions.
Leverkusen had two strong opportunities in the next five minutes, seeing one effort blocked and then, from the corner that followed, having Jonathan Tah force Manuel Neuer into a save. Luckily for the hosts, misses did not come back to haunt them as they made a perfect start to the second half. Alejandro Grimaldo and Nathan Tella combined perfectly for the former to smash home just five minutes after the restart.
Bayern managed to push up a bit from then on as Joshua Kimmich and Thomas Muller came on at the hour mark but they were unable to truly threaten Leverkusen goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky.
Bayern's humiliation was completed right at the end when Jeremie Frimpong raced forward and smashed into an unguarded net from outside the box, rounding off an awesome display from his team.
The visitors managed just one shot on target – a long-range effort from Noussair Mazraoui in the 26th minute – and can have no complaints about the final scoreline.

He picked the perfect occasion to score his first goal for Leverkusen! Stanisic fired in to shock his parent club and give the home team a massive lift. He refused to celebrate wildly, but he must have been absolutely screaming inside after netting in such a big game. He did not stop there, though, as he dug in with excellent tackles and kept his passing tidy in a fantastic performance overall.
GettyTHE BIG LOSER
He was understandably billed as Bayern's big threat against their rivals, but Harry Kane was kept silent for the entire game at the BayArena. His only shot was a long range one in the 78th minute that was blocked. He also had 17 touches – fewer than any other player who started the match. Of course, it would be ludicrous to put the blame solely on his shoulders, but Bayern needed much more from the England star.

Leverkusen will be confident of maintaining their excellent run when they take on Heidenheim in their next Bundesliga match, while Bayern will attempt to bounce back when they come up against Lazio in the Champions League in midweek.
